ECHO – Grief and bereavement with Joshua Black, PhD

The BC Centre for Palliative Care (BCCPC), the Provincial Hub for the Palliative Care ECHO Project, is excited to announce new ECHO sessions and series on Grief and Bereavement.

Beginning June 27, join Joshua Black, PhD, Bereavement Initiative Manager at BCCPC, to learn about and discuss the impact of COVID-19 on bereavement in British Columbia. These sessions are FREE and open to anyone wanting to learn more about the impact of COVID-19 on bereavement. Register here

On July 25, Joshua will again lead an ECHO session, this time on How to Best Support Bereaved People in the Post-COVID-19 Era: Provincial Evidence-Informed Recommendations by Stakeholders in British Columbia. Register here

Following these two introductory sessions, we will be hosting a new series of sessions on Grief and Bereavement Literacy: Exploring the knowledge, skills, and values that promote compassion and support for self and others. This series is for anyone interested in increasing their knowledge around grief and bereavement to support them personally or in their professional careers. We hope to attract a wide range of people including health care providers, community organizational staff and volunteers, and those personally affected by loss.

This series will run each month, with a different theme or topic, on grief and bereavement. Some of the first sessions will include:

  • Grief and bereavement following a death due to toxic drug poisoning
  • Grief and bereavement following a death of an animal or pet
  • Children’s grief

Why attend an ECHO session?
ECHO is an ideal combination of education, peer connection, and collaboration, fostering an “all teach, all learn” approach. These 1- or 1.5-hour sessions are designed to be a vehicle for learning and sharing your own experience, resourcefulness, and resilience.

Sessions are via Zoom and are facilitated by a content expert who will guide you through a short presentation on the topic, followed by bereaved people sharing their lived experience (when possible), and the remainder of the time spent in discussion.
