Community-University Engagement Support (CUES) Fund Awarded to Provided Grief and Bereavement Support to the DTES

A successful joint funding application by BCCPC and the Carnegie Community Centre in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside has secured $25,000 from UBC’s Community-University Engagement Support (CUES) Fund.

The funding will allow the Carnegie Community Centre to conduct grief and bereavement support programming in 2024 and 2025, integrating BCCPC’s bereavement research into the Carnegie Centre’s grief and bereavement programming.

In particular, the recent research by BCCPC and the Kelowna Homelessness Research Centre (KHRC) in Kelowna and the DTES interviewed 80 people with lived experience of bereavement and homelessness and explored their bereavement experiences and support needs, including suggestions from participants on how to improve how grief and bereavement support are provided for those experiencing homelessness.

While this is a significant step forward in creating safe spaces for bereaved people experiencing homelessness to grieve, there is a lot of work that still needs to be done. We hope that we can continue to support the implementation of more support in this area, as it is an action item from the provincial collaborative action plan for grief and bereavement support in BC.
