All teach, all learn: ECHO gets busy in Fall 2022

Logo of Project ECHO, Pallium Canada & BCCPC

As the provincial hub for Pallium Canada’s Palliative Care ECHO project, BCCPC remains busy offering free sessions to a variety of audiences on a wide range of topics. ECHO creates virtual knowledge-sharing networks by bringing together healthcare providers and subject matter experts using videoconference technology, brief lecture presentations, and case-based learning, fostering an “all learn, all teach” approach.

Some of what’s been happening with our ECHOs, and what’s coming up:

Introduction to Advance Care Planning – On October 26, BCCPC hosted an education session for individuals, groups and organizations to introduce concepts of Advance Care Planning (ACP) and share resources. If you would like to access resources mentioned from the session, please contact us echo@bc-cpc.ca.

Serious Illness Conversation Collaborative – On October 20, we welcomed Cari Borenko and Andrew Saunderson from Fraser Health Authority who presented at the SIC Collaborative Updates & Innovations ECHO. Cari and Andrew presented on Systems Improvements on Coaching & Mentoring and how they have implemented tools and techniques with their ACP team. The session recording, slides and resources are available on the SIC Community of Practice on our website.

ECHO sessions for all health-care providers – In late September, we launched the first of our Flexing Your Core ECHO education sessions. These sessions build on the Strengthen Your Core curriculum on the Learning Hub – 15-minute online modules based on the eight domains of the Palliative Core Competencies. We are very excited that over 400 learners are registered in the online curriculum and some modules are being incorporated as requirements in undergraduate nursing courses.

There’s still time to join! The Flexing Your Core ECHO sessions are 30-minute interactive sessions that build on the online modules and provide a chance for learners to share experiences, apply their learning to case studies and reflect on their own practice. Anyone who works with people affected by serious illness incorporating the palliative approach to care in your daily practice in any clinical setting is invited to join! More information on each session, see the series webpage.

“Thank you for providing the session. I think really important for new staff who are trying to put theory into practice”.

Upcoming Flexing Your Core sessions:

Webinar: A Facilitated discision on the Hosice Volunteer Competency Framework
November 23 11:00-12:00 noon
Join Pablita Thomas, Executive Director of the BC Hospice Palliative Care Association and Tina Lowery, Program Manager with the BC Centre for Palliative Care for the hour to discuss and share your experience with the Hospice Volunteer Palliative Competency Framework.

In the summer of 2021, the Provincial Competencies for Hospice Volunteers was released. This document was co-created with a working group representing hospice organizations from across British Columbia with the objective that it could be used as a foundational document throughout the volunteer management cycle when developing your own recruitment, screening, training, and assessment strategies.

The principle of ECHO is “all teach, all learn” and so want to hear from you! We will be reviewing the results of the survey sent out by the BC CPC earlier this summer asking how Hospices are using the document in their programs and will use this data as a jumping off point to the sessions facilitated discussion. You will also have an opportunity to hear from other Hospices and learn from their experience with the document and how they have implemented it into their programs.
