Promoting Advance Care Planning in Chinese and South Asian Communities in BC
(Advance Care Planning Cultural Adaptations Initiative)
About the Initiative:
The aim of this Initiative is to improve Advance Care Planning by British Columbians with a Chinese or South Asian background, who primarily speak Cantonese, Mandarin or Punjabi. Specifically, those who are affected by serious illness, frailty or chronic medical conditions (patients and their caregivers). The goal is to empower members of the Chinese and South Asian Communities in BC advocate for care that is aligned with their wishes.
The Initiative focuses on translating and culturally adapting an existing community-led Advance Care Planning education model which was developed for the English-speaking population. The model includes a training module and a toolkit of resources to enable community volunteers and organizations to deliver Advance Care Planning information sessions in any of the languages spoken by the target populations. The initiative will also develop an online training module for healthcare providers addressing the cultural considerations while conducting Advance Care Planning conversations with patients from a Chinese or South Asian background.
