Compassionate Communities Toolkit

Compassionate Communities Toolkit

What is a Compassionate Community?

BC Centre for Palliative Care has adopted and adapted the concept of the global Compassionate Communities movement. This guides our efforts in helping communities take an active role in connecting patients, families, and caregivers to physical, emotional, social, and spiritual supports.

We can help your community organization build a compassionate, supportive network for people affected by serious illness, end of life, caregiving, and grieving.

The Compassionate Community Toolkit was developed with input from compassionate communities across British Columbia.

What is a CC_Page_2

The Compassionate Community Toolkit includes:

1. Compassionate Community Ideal

The Compassionate Community Ideal is a simple tool developed to inform, inspire and assist in identifying important features in building an ideal compassionate community.

2. Compassionate Community Index

A survey to assess your community’s readiness to become a more compassionate community. Results help identify strengths and guide actions towards building a Compassionate Community. The index can also serve as a benchmark to evaluate Compassionate Community initiatives as they grow.

3. Compassionate Community Action Guide

The Action Guide is recommended after the completion of a Compassionate Community Index (CC Index) survey by a community group to assess the readiness of their community to become a more Compassionate Community. It suggests a variety of activities and project ideas to consider for building upon the community’s level of readiness and commitment in each of the five sections in the CC Index.
