Since launching the Essential Conversations series in 2022, BCCPC has hosted 10 sessions illustrating how these conversations can be implemented into everyday practice, focusing on the role and scope of all healthcare providers working with patients, not just specific disciplines. (A number of past sessions recording are available on our YouTube page)
Some of the past series sessions have highlighted leaders using essential conversations in renal and oncology settings; adapting conversations for specific populations like people experiencing structural inequities; and, more recently, using culturally specific language and principles to guide conversations in palliative care.
In our May 2024 session, Dr. Kelvin Lou led an engaging session on Culturally Sensitive Care for the Chinese Community. The session started with a short presentation followed by a discussion of two case studies, and concluded with a robust round of questions and answers. Dr. Lou’s specific, practical communication tips and skills were helpful and informative for participants. By the end of the session, participants were able to:
- Explain the role that Confucian concepts play in influencing health care communication
- Reframe health care decisions through the lens of filial piety
- Apply indirect communication strategies
There were over 40 participants in attendance and over 90 views on YouTube. One participant commented, “This session was absolutely fantastic. I wish this was available years ago when I started practicing in palliative care.” A recording of this session and other informative ECHO sessions can be found here.
